Adult Speech and Language Disorders
ADULT SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DISORDERS
Speech disorders happen when someone at any age is unable to produce speech sounds correctly or fluently. They can occur during childhood, adolescence or adulthood, as the result of late language development, a medical problem, or from no known cause. Causes of speech disorders include:
- Speech delays
- Articulation errors
- Apraxia
- Dysarthria
- Dysfluency
- Hearing loss
Language disorders develop when someone has difficulty understanding what they are hearing or reading, or being understood when sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Medical causes of language disorders in adolescents and adults include:
- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
- Aphasia
- Dementia
- Brain Injury
- Parkinson’s
- Stroke
- Hearing Loss
